Prof. Terry J. Lovell - Commentary on Herman Cain and the 999 plan

I ask that you please give the Professor a moment of your time,,,,,

I would like to add that I agree that Mr. Herman Cain is the only Conservative candidate to offer such a tax plan on the campaign trail, ever, at least in my lifetime of 47 years. Sure GW talked about Social Security but that was about an entitlement program (Ponzi scheme).

Now there are those tearing apart the Cain 999 plan and that of course is fair game. I myself might differ on some aspects of it. But the under-lying point here is we have to change the status quo as to taxing policy and Mr. Cain has started a very serious conversation about this topic and actually proposed a plan how to do so unlike his rivals.

It would be wise for all to remember as well that any legislation on any taxing policy must go through the House of Representatives first and then the Senate. These bills of course differ in both chambers with many, many changes from both. Should they agree to a compromise in a joint chamber bill, that does not mean a President Cain would even sign it if he sees as not meeting the goal(s) he set out to achieve which the Tea Party stands for.

Bottom line: 999 is a good starting point to real tax policy change this Nation needs, not only for growth, jobs in the private sector, shrink back government but more importantly have every American have some skin in the game.

This is the problem when religions of any belief become entangled with politics of any ideology in any one country. The two are are like oil and water as they do not mix. If and when they do both are corrupted and lives, many very real human lives are ruined. One need only to look at Islam to prove that and yet this abomination is revealed in the West.

The situation here in Spain is yet another example of the Church being, well completely fallible from the top down and in my humble opinion is in an unforgivable position yet again.

Yes, I am a Christian and said "unforgivable".

Before those who would attack me for my stance on this I would remind you first that we are all children and many including myself treasure our upbringing with our natural parents and would not trade that experience for the world.

Then there are those of us that are parents and some have actually and very unfortunately suffered (and I mean suffer) the loss of a child or children at birth.

Considering both of those facts I highly advise you think through what has happened here in this revelation in Spain should you wish to comment.

Please, again to those who might differ with me, do not attempt to say it was the socialist governments fault alone as the Church in Spain governed by the Vatican in Rome was completely complicit in this decades long abomination.

The Church, the last bastion of security for millions the world over, continues to be just the opposite.

I am a Christian, I am human and I am fallible but will die before I renounce Jesus Christ and His Father before Him or Their teachings which begs the question of just what the Church will do,,,next.

The Pigford case is exactly what the "occupiers" want, redistribution of anybody else's money to them for absolutely nothing in return or otherwise known as theft.

The key point in the Pigford case that swelled and still is swelling the settlement payout(s) was that any black farmer who had "attempted to farm" was eligible for payment. Some prerequisite huh?

Now apply the word 'attempted' in conjunction with school, work/employment, pay back a loan,, etc. and you begin to see just what these "people" want - everything for nothing so long as they claim they "attempted" normal life and this will come at your expense.

Are you willing to accept this as the "new norm"?

I posed this following question in a response to a comment on an earlier post to reader and Blogger Trestin who is justifiably concerned as to the actions of the Federal Reserve and I admittedly not waiting for his response (my apology Trestin), I thought I might pose it to all:

Q; If not the Fed or politicians controlling our monetary policy just who do you suggest do this?

This came about by obvious maleficence by the current, well past decade or so, Fed actions as it goes beyond their purpose as Constitutionally established and for total disregard of long established economics due to political fortunes and interests.

I really want to know if those who want to get rid of the Fed entirely as opposed to reining it in back to it's stated purpose as created and furthermore do not want politicians directing the United States monetary policy, well just what or who would you replace it with?

Food for thought

I have no answer to this except to say that some entity must do this, responsibly that is, as even though we conservatives believe in a free market we are also talking about a stable monetary system yet with the fortitude to foresee or forestall global monetary forces to protect our National interests.

If you want to change the GOP on a real grassroots American effort (Tea Party) to bring it back to it's founding based on the Constitution then I suggest Mr. Herman Cain.

If you like the status quo, party be damned, well you are a lost cause and deserve,,,well what we have now, and that brings with it a wrath that has not be seen on this landscape called the United States since the Civil War.

I have received a few complaints of comments not appearing as they should and am finding out a few things about it and addressing them.

Those familiar with my former comment forum will note it no longer is there as I have dropped it and reverted back to the standard Blogger comment section. This was only part of the problem as I am discovering but has restored some comments.

Blogger itself is the other part as I am also discovering comments I myself have made on others blogs have been prevented from even showing?

All comments made to CP I have sent (burned) to (3) email sources via Blogger and what I have seen in those is exactly what has appeared on this blog with the exception of my last post. My friend 'Banned' comment about this situation did not show up as it did in a burned email prompting the disposal of 'Echo' and a more vigorous attempt at fixing this issue.

The comment I refer to by 'Banned' above is now appearing but I am not satisfied until I find out what is behind this occurring.

I have always kept this an open forum and will continue to do so and appreciate all who visit and of course wish to leave a comment.

'Little threat to Earth from big asteroid: NASA' (I don't feel any better)

I love how NASA tries to put on a happy face on this,,,,,,,,,

Fewer giant asteroids are out in space than once thought and most of the biggest near-Earth asteroids have been found, leaving little threat of one smashing into the planet, NASA said Thursday. (So just because they have found some means they can guaruntee they will not hit us? Um, how well did NASA do with caculating just where THEIR satellite would crash?)

The latest data from the US space agency's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE telescope, shows that 93 percent of asteroids 3,300 feet (one kilometer) and larger (Or, 11 football stadiums combined and larger) have been found. (Leaving 7% of GIANT asteroids NOT FOUND)

Scientists used to think there were about 1,000 of them, but they have revised that number down to 981, of which 911 have been located and are being tracked. (WOW! Only 19 less and 70 yet to be found if, and thats a big IF, the numbers are to be trusted.)

"The risk of a really large asteroid impacting the Earth before we could find and warn of it has been substantially reduced," said Tim Spahr, (Substantially? Really?) the director of the Minor Planet Center at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Where the challenge remains is with mid-sized near-Earth asteroids 330 feet (100 meters) and larger (Or, a football stadium and larger). The WISE data shows there are about 19,500 -- not 35,000 as previous data suggested -- and that only 5,200 of these are being tracked.

That leaves nearly 15,000 yet to be found, NASA said. (Actually 14,300 but who's counting?)

A near-Earth asteroid is defined as a space rock that orbits within 120 million miles (195 million kilometers) of the sun into Earth's orbital vicinity. (Or, in less astronomical terms - DAMN CLOSE)

Amy Mainzer, lead author of the latest research which appears in the Astrophysical Journal, said WISE has given astronomers a better sense of what is out there, and what is not.

"It's like a population census, where you poll a small group of people to draw conclusions about the entire country," she said. (Yea and we all know how well that works?)

Oh well, have a pleasant night sleep knowing that NASA has it all under control.

A Nearly 17-Year Love Comes to a Quiet End

Some readers may be aware of the CP family canine matriarch Bailey as I have written here and elsewhere about this one particular family member.

Bailey had reached the end of her rope today after nearly 17 years of pure and unrelenting mutual love, fun and loyalty. Without a doubt it is a very sad day in our household as she will be missed greatly.

In short my Wife (then Girlfriend) and I happened upon a scene where we ended-up rescuing this puppy to be later named Bailey and it was with very heavy hearts that we came to the decision to have her euthanized today. Bailey basically 'told' us it was her time; walking, eating and drinking one day then enough was enough for her, she was ready to go.

We love you Bailey and thank you for everything!

Apparently Pres. Obama seeks to shore-up his base and particlarily the black portion of it as it has been slipping greatly as of late along with all other "groups" as well and this is for obvious reasons.

Now the screaming headline across the Drudge Report today; 'OBAMA TO BLACKS: 'PUT ON YOUR MARCHING SHOES' links to an AP (Associated Press) account of Obama meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus; 'Obama tells blacks to 'stop complainin' and fight'.

The third paragraph in the AP's story is what caught my attention;

"It gets folks discouraged. I know. I listen to some of y'all," Obama told an audience of some 3,000 in a darkened Washington convention center.

Did you catch it?

That is what to me is the very obvious racial and offensive overtone in that AP accounting and I am not talking about Obamas quote in that. Obvious to myself that is and purposely veiled by the AP for those who would just 'skim-over' such an article.

I have stated before that words are very important as is the knowledge to read them. But that does not do anyone any good if they do not understand the words or the context of them when strung together be the context obvious or veiled.

The context of the example given above is veiled racism from none other than a left-wing MSM outlet and they should be called-out on it, everytime.

Woman lighting cigarette walks into moving train

A woman is recovering today after she walked into a moving train at Needham Center Station while trying to light her cigarette, according to an MBTA Transit Police report.

At about 8:45 p.m. Thursday, Sandra Gawlik, 44, of South Natick, was walking across the platform attempting to light the cigarette, police said. She did not notice the incoming train and walked into its side.

The force of the speeding train knocked her to the ground, police said.

She was transported to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, where she is being treated for a broken clavicle and an injury to the left side of her head, the police report added.

Gawlik works at the Center Cafe, which is connected to the Needham Center Station platform.

The passengers on the train were bused to Needham Heights. Service resumed at about 11:14 p.m.

OK, I am not necessarily calling this woman "stupid" as suggested in my title but rather myself as I am a cigarette smoker. (Although it is a direct swipe at "light rail")

Now as a long-time smoker I do not excuse this woman from not knowing her surroundings (nor anybody), I do however understand the urge to smoke. For those who do smoke or who have know of this habit all too well.

I do not use the term 'stupid' in general terms but rather in individual scenarios and in this one, smoking cigarettes, fits me just perfectly. I have had my fill and then some of this particular, insidious habit.

HI, MY NAME IS CHRISTOPHER AND I AM A SMOKER (Some may know that drill?)

It is my wish to rid myself of this habit for many a reason most notably health and money and not my worry of hitting a moving train.

The only reason I announce this is that I wish your encouragement in this endeavor of mine, as all of you have given me much promise we can together save our futures both here in the U.S. and abroad.

[Note to Smokers: No, I will not become a rabid anti-smoker. This is a personal choice of my own volition]

This outreach of mine may sound selfish,,,because it is. When one knows their friends support them it makes it all the easier a task to accomplish.

I of course wish the woman in the article above a speedy recovery and thank all reading this for even the smallest of good will and yes a prayer, it's a tough habit to break.

I believe in American exceptionalism but you just got to give our brethren in the UK a hand here!

Peter, a 67-year-old retired chartered surveyor, who lives near Newark, has broken ten world records in his 30 years of gardening.

He has been trying for the honour of cultivating the world’s heaviest onion for 25 years but always missed out until yesterday’s victory at Harrogate Flower Show.

I have a few ideas just what to do with that monster onion but also know my Dad, God rest him, would be pleased with this baby being he ate an onion sandwich at least twice a week, really.

I love onions myself but thought my Dad was nuts in this regard? He was not, as he explained that growing up during the Great Depression people ate and got used to the very staples we today take for granted.

I am very happy my Dad explained that to me at a young age as it is very important information right now.

Congrats Peter and hold onto that onion!

While vegging out on my short hiatus from work I stumbled across YouTube and found myself via that site catching from the beginning a live performance from a band I had never heard of before 'Foster The People'.

I must say it was well worth the visit at least for me as I enjoyed their sound and energy and it seems the audience down in Austin, Texas did so as well. If this sound is what is deemed "indie music" count me as a fan, of at least this band anyhow.

Or is this 'tracking children's weight' a pay-back to the Obama administration for throwing money at you for your bridge project? By the by, I do not support that bridge idea either as the private sector can do it better, faster and cheaper and you of all people should know this.

Back to this liberal, socialist nanny-state idea of tracking anything that is of a private and personal nature by any type or size of government is un-American at it's core and you should rescind any and all actions toward this end.

This, your 'policy', is exactly why nearly 88% across the Nation are AGAINST the current POTUS and his Marxist policies (Obamacare) and will see him unemployed in 2012.

What you have put into motion with this action is the deepest intrusion into the privacy held between a doctor and his or her patient no matter the age and furthermore disrupting what would normally be a private matter between parents and their offspring.

To be completely honest I have obviously heard about this story but never really followed any of the details.

Sure I heard the blurbs on news programs but the story was picked up so fast by the tabloids that I lost interest in any of it fast. In addition it was not really political and I was not yet a blogger in 2007.

In the blurbs I did hear, mentioned above, I gained no real information so as to form an opinion on Knox's' innocence or guilt in the crime she was and is in retrial charged with, murder of a British Subject in Italy.

This brings me to those of you that have paid attention to this crime and subsequent trial(s). I bring this story up due to a recent article by Ann Coulter pertaining directly to this subject and if all true (I have never been given reason to doubt Coulter) it is pretty damning.

So what say you that are more in-the-know on this than obviously myself? Do you support what Coulter has to say on the matter and Knox's original conviction or do you say Knox was framed or otherwise innocent of the crime she was convicted of?

I have no dog in this fight, just seeking information and opinion.

For 15 years, from the mid 1970's to 1990, I worked in Detroit , Michigan . I watched it descend into the abyss of crime, debauchery, gun play, drugs, school truancy, car-jacking, gangs and human depravity. I watched entire city blocks burned out. I watched graffiti explode on buildings, cars, trucks, buses and school yards. Trash everywhere!

Detroiters walked through it, tossed more into it, and ignored it. Tens of thousands, and then hundreds of thousands today exist on federal welfare, free housing, and food stamps!

With Aid to Dependent Children, minority women birthed eight to 10, and in one case, one woman birthed 24 children as reported by the Detroit Free Press, all on American taxpayer dollars.

A new child meant a new car payment, new TV, and whatever mom wanted.. I saw Lyndon Baines Johnson's 'Great Society' flourish in Detroit . If you give money for doing nothing, you will get more hands out taking money for doing nothing.

Mayor Coleman Young, perhaps the most corrupt mayor in America, outside of Richard Daley in Chicago, rode Detroit down to its knees... He set the benchmark for cronyism, incompetence, and arrogance. As a black man, he said, "I am the MFIC." The IC meant "in charge".

You can figure out the rest Detroit became a majority black city with 67 percent African-Americans.

As a United Van Lines truck driver for my summer job from teaching math and science, I loaded hundreds of American families into my van for a new life in another city or state.

Detroit plummeted from 1.8 million citizens to 912,000 today. At the same time, legal and illegal immigrants converged on the city, so much so, that Muslims number over 300,000. Mexicans number 400,000 throughout Michigan , but most work in Detroit . As the whites moved out, the Muslims moved in.

As the crimes became more violent, the whites fled. Finally, unlawful Mexicans moved in at a torrid pace. Detroit suffers so much shoplifting that grocery stores no longer operate in many inner city locations. You could cut the racial tension in the air with a knife! Detroit may be one of our best examples of multiculturalism: pure dislike, and total separation from America .

Today, you hear Muslim calls to worship over the city like a new American Baghdad with hundreds of Islamic mosques in Michigan , paid for by Saudi Arabia oil money. High school flunk out rates reached 76 percent last June, according to NBC's Brian Williams. Classrooms resemble more foreign countries than America .. English? Few speak it! The city features a 50 percent illiteracy rate and growing.

Unemployment hit 28.9 percent in 2009 as the auto industry vacated the city. In Time Magazine's October 4, 2009, "The Tragedy of Detroit: How a great city fell, and how it can rise again," I choked on the writer's description of what happened. "If Detroit had been ravaged by a hurricane, and submerged by a ravenous flood, we'd know a lot more about it," said Daniel Okrent. "If drought and carelessness had spread brush fires across the city, we'd see it on the evening news every night." Earthquake, tornadoes, you name it, if natural disaster had devastated the city that was once the living proof of American prosperity, the rest of the country might take notice.

But Detroit , once our fourth largest city, now 11th and slipping rapidly, has had no such luck. Its disaster has long been a slow unwinding that seemed to remove it from the rest of the country.

Even the death rattle that in the past year emanated from its signature industry brought more attention to the auto executives than to the people of the city, who had for so long been victimized by their dreadful decision making."

As Coleman Young's corruption brought the city to its knees, no amount of federal dollars could save the incredible payoffs, kickbacks and illegality permeating his administration. I witnessed the city's death from the seat of my 18-wheeler tractor trailer because I moved people out of every sector of decaying Detroit .

"By any quantifiable standard, the city is on life support. Detroit 's treasury is $300 million short of the funds needed to provide the barest municipal services," Okrent said. "The school system, which six years ago was compelled by the teachers' union to reject a philanthropist's offer of $200 million to build 15 small, independent charter high schools, is in receivership. The murder rate is soaring, and 7 out of 10 remain unsolved. Three years after Katrina devastated New Orleans , unemployment in that city hit a peak of 11%. In Detroit today, the unemployment rate is 28.9%. That's worth spelling out: twenty-eight point nine percent.

At the end of Okrent's report, and he will write a dozen more about Detroit, he said, "That's because the story of Detroit is not simply one of a great city's collapse, it's also about the erosion of the industries that helped build the country we know today. The ultimate fate of Detroit will reveal much about the character of America in the 21st century.

If what was once the most prosperous manufacturing city in the nation has been brought to its knees, what does that say about our recent past? And if it can't find a way to get up, what does that say about America’s future?"

As you read in my book review of Chris Steiner's book,"$20 Per Gallon", the auto industry won't come back. Immigration will keep pouring more and more uneducated third world immigrants from the Middle East into Detroit , thus creating a beachhead for Islamic hegemony in America . If 50 percent illiteracy continues, we will see more homegrown terrorists spawned out of the Muslim ghettos of Detroit . Illiteracy plus Islam equals walking human bombs.

You have already seen it in Madrid, Spain, London, England, and Paris, France with train bombings, subway bombings and riots. As their numbers grow, so will their power to enact their barbaric Sharia Law that negates republican forms of government, first amendment rights, and subjugates women to the lowest rungs on the human ladder. We will see more honor killings by upset husbands, fathers and brothers that demand subjugation by their daughters, sisters and wives. Muslims prefer beheadings of women to scare the hell out of any other members of their sect from straying. Multiculturalism: what a perfect method to kill our language, culture, country and way of life.

This is typical from a Hollywood socialist and of course there is absolutely nothing of substance to back up any one of those adjectives that he attributes to Obama nor does Clooney attempt to offer any.

Smart

The president may be in fact smarter than anyone Clooney knows but that is a far cry from those you or I may know personally or admire for their intellect from afar such as Thomas Sowell for instance. If one were to compare Obama to Sowell, Obama comes out dumber then the dimmest bulb of anyone you know.

I suppose if one wants to see unemployment remain at 9.1% or higher, the economy stagnant and shrinking and millions of more homes going into foreclosure they would see the president as being smart. Of course this line of thinking, if it can be called that, would include how the world sees us under Obama with even more countries hating the U.S. to and including our supposed allies. G.W. Bush was chastised (and also called dumb) by the left for the image of the U.S. around the globe, but as I remember our allies were still in our corner at that time.

Taking the above into account, smart is not an adjective I myself would attribute to Obama.

Nice

One has to wonder if Clooney is speaking again on a personal basis here in that he has met with Obama one would guess numerous times. On a personal level I would guess this to be an honest appraisal of Obama by Clooney.

I myself would not mind sitting down with Obama sharing a beer or two and 'shootin the shit' so-to-speak just as I would welcome the opportunity to do so with GW, although Bush would prefer a substitute beverage.

But honestly, I know plenty of nice people personally, all are of different backgrounds; White and Blue collar, Black and White, Male and Female, G.E.D. to College educated,,,etc. and there is not one I would recommend for the highest office in our Nation.

The point here is of course is that Clooney mentioning this is basically a ploy on "feelings" as in we can't make Obama a one-term president, he is too nice. Feelings do not translate into good policy, as a matter of fact, when "feelings" do make it into policy it turns out they are not very nice at all as we have all seen time and again in "unintended consequences".

Being nice is all fine and dandy but lets get back to sound policy based in reality and standing law rather than the ever murky realm of feelings.

Compassion

This word is bandied about so often that most do not understand the definition of it any longer, so let's revisit it shall we:

com·pas·sion [kuhm-pash-uhn] noun

1. a feeling of deep sympathy and sorrow for another who is stricken by misfortune, accompanied by a strong desire to alleviate the suffering.

Here again we see the word "feeling" with the addition of the wording "strong desire" which the latter is a product of the former.

This is not to say having compassion is wrong but I would argue that there are many existing private institution's such as Church's, Synagogues and Temples (1) that not only have the "strong desire to alleviate the suffering" but actually do just that based on Faith and from the charity given of free will by others.

Now government can help in this regard and that is by getting the hell out of the way, stop attacking God and return to welcoming His presence - quickly I might add - and lowering taxes so as to allow individuals to help even more so than they do now.

We the people of the United States are in fact the government so stated in the Constitution. We the people of the United States are collectively smart, nice and very compassionate so we do not need nor ever have needed elected representatives, no matter the office bestowed upon them, creating and signing laws to bend these qualities in any one direction other than what we as individuals choose to apply them.

As to the American people being collectively smart, this is not always evident as in 2006 and 2008 but we are known to make an honest effort to correct our mistakes.

In 2010 we corrected to a certain extent the 2006 mistake. Now we must continue on this honest pattern of reform and correct the 2008 blunder in 2012, we simply cannot afford to do otherwise.

Note to Self; Don't Die in Wayne County, Michigan

Not surprisingly the Wayne County Seat (government) resides within the borders of it's largest city, Detroit.

Not knowing how other cities stack-up on this situation (excuse the pun) I highly advise not only avoiding Detroit for yet another addition of justifiable reason's, but also the entire county should you or loved ones happen to die there in either a hospital setting or fall victim to rampant crime there.

The question posed by the news anchor before the report "How do we solve the issues?" is quite simple really and can be found in the report if liberal minds were not so, well liberal.

The Wayne County Commissioner speaks of turning the medical examiners department into a "training facility" which is not too terrible an idea as a cost-cutting move and improving expediency. But if one thinks further on it that means there are many students in this field who eventually will be seeking employment and most clear thinking people know just what entity is best able to fill that need, the private sector.

Just a Reminder on East Coast / Midwest / South Earthquakes

I posted the following graphic in a reply to my (our) good friend a fellow blogger, banned (What a great and well informed guy!) from the UK yesterday regarding our recent earthquake and thought it might be wise but not alarming (at least in the government's eyes) to remind all of the danger that still exists considering the region in general.

I will not go on and on about what happened between 1811 and 1812 in this region but you can imagine by the numbers in population and subsequent infrastructure what a series of (4) earthquakes ranging from 7.0 - 8.1 in magnitude would do.

Considering magnitudes mentioned above and also the proximity I found this map / graphic to be most illustrative as to what I speak of:

We all hear the question of when will the "Big One" hit California along the San Andreas fault line but I think the better question is when will the next "Big One" hit the New Madrid?

Just food for thought.

A Modern Day Irish Poem 'Omagh-ah' (Maya Angelou can't touch this)

Many speak of famed American Maya Angelou as some great poet and for the life of me I will never understand why? I have suffered through listening to her, in her own word's, and all I hear is of experiences not of her own but rather of ghosts long gone. I claim no 'critic status' but prefer, as I have found in the past, that poetry be of a first-hand nature as in say Francis Scott Key for instance, a strong instance I might add.

What I present here is not of the usual nature found on CP but is somewhat related as it regards to world politics and the state of terrorism we all face today, but more specifically what I myself regard as poetry.

Some, knowing of my background might believe this presentation to be biased in that I have Irish heritage and there maybe some truth to that, but would remind those of that thought that my Irish heritage dates back to that of the Republic of Ireland, not the Northern Six Counties affiliated with and in the family of the United Kingdom. I myself see all Irish as just that, Irish, and was raised that way. Sure there is the religious institutional affiliation difference but Christianity in general, soil, a way with word's and what all of us share - blood - that is whats bond's us, all of us no matter where we hail from.

I digress.

This is a first-hand account set into poetry by an Irish Lass (obviously younger when the event actually occurred) about a terrible tragedy in 1998 that only terrorists, of any stripe or nationality, could set into motion. If those reading/hearing this have forgotten the event this Gal Catherine Brogan speaks of or are to young to know of this tragedy in Omagh, N. Ireland I have included a link below.

Again, Maya Angelou 'can't touch this'.

Three significant historical events have been eclipsed by Obama: 1) Jimmy Carter will no longer be looked upon as the worst president in American history; 2) Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton will no longer be recognized as the greatest liars in presidential history; 3) Clinton's stain on Monica's dress, and what that did to the White House in general and the office of the president specifically, will forever pale in comparison to the stain and stench of Obama.

I need not spend much time on the failure of Obama as president. His tenure has been a failure on every measurable level. So much so, in fact, that some of the staunchest, most respected liberal Democrats and Democratic supporters have not only openly criticized him – some even more harshly than this essayist – but they have called for him to step down.

Richard Nixon's words "I am not a crook," punctuated with his involvement in Watergate, and Bill Clinton's finger-wagging as he told one of the most pathetic lies in presidential history, in the aftermath of Obama, will be viewed as mere prevarications.

Mr. Nixon and Clinton lied to save their backsides. Although, I would argue there are no plausible explanations for doing what they did, I could entertain arguments pursuant to understanding their rationales for lying. But in the case of Obama, he lies because he is a liar. He doesn't only lie to cover his misdeeds – he lies to get his way. He lies to belittle others and to make himself look presentable at their expense. He lies about his faith, his associations, his mother, his father and his wife. He lies and bullies to keep his background secret. His lying is congenital and compounded by socio-psychological factors of his life.

Never in my life, inside or outside of politics, have I witnessed such dishonesty in a political leader. He is the most mendacious political figure I have ever witnessed. Even by the low standards of his presidential predecessors, his narcissistic, contumacious arrogance is unequaled. Using Obama as the bar, Nero would have to be elevated to sainthood.

As the stock markets were crashing, taking with them the remaining life savings of untold tens of thousands, Obama was hosting his own birthday celebration, which was an event of epicurean splendidness. The shamelessness of the event was that it was not a state dinner to welcome foreign dignitaries, nor was it to honor an American accomplishment – it was to honor the Pharaoh, Barack Hussein Obama. The event's sole purpose was for the Pharaoh to have his loyal subjects swill wine, indulge in gluttony and behavior unfit to take place on the property of taxpayers, as they suffer. It was of a magnitude comparable to that of Tyco CEO Dennis Kozlowski's $2 million birthday extravaganza for its pure lack of respect for the people.

Permit me to digress momentarily. The U.S. Capitol and the White House were built with the intent of bringing awe and respect to America and her people. They were also built with the intent of being the greatest of equalizers. I can tell you, having personally been to both, there is a moment of awe and humility associated with being in the presence of the history of those buildings. They are to be honored and inscribed into our national psyche, not treated as a Saturday night house party at Chicago's Cabrini-Green.

The people of America own that home Obama and his wife continue to debase with their pan-ghetto behavior. It is clear that Obama and family view themselves as royalty, but they're not. They are employees of "we the people," who are suffering because of his failed policies. What message does this behavior send to those who today are suffering as never before?

What message does it send to all Americans who are struggling? Has anyone stopped to think what the stock market downturn forebodes for those 80 million baby boomers who will be retiring in the next period of years? Is there a snowball's chance in the Sahara that every news program on the air would applaud this behavior if it were George W. Bush? To that point, do you remember the media thrashing Bush took for having a barbecue at the White House?

Like Nero – who was only slightly less debaucherous than Caligula – with wine on his lips Obama treated "we the people" the way Caligula treated those over whom he lorded.

Many in America wanted to be proud when the first person of color was elected president, but instead, they have been witness to a congenital liar, a woman who has been ashamed of America her entire life, failed policies, intimidation and a commonality hitherto not witnessed in political leaders. He and his wife view their life at our expense as an entitlement – while America's people go homeless, hungry and unemployed.

I am one who religiously reads the WSJ' 'Best of the Web' by James Taranto for years now and think this is the first time I have shared his wit and wisdom on the pages of CP.

Mr. Taranto has the ability to make me LOL at some very serious subjects while making very valid points. Granted, this current administration and congressional liberals make his work fairly easy but no matter his target you get educated on the subject, the English language and all the while you get a laugh to boot, enjoy,,,

President Obama's Gallup approval rating has dipped below 40%--or, as the White House prefers to put it, the president has saved or created 39 approval points. The New York Times reports that Obama and his advisers are plotting a comeback.

"It is their judgment that moderate voters want tangible results rather than speeches," the Times reports. We're not sure about that. Obama has delivered plenty of awful speeches, but his tangible results have been far, far worse.

"Administration officials . . . have increasingly concluded that the best thing Mr. Obama can do for the economy may be winning a second term," the Times reports without evident irony. How about not winning a second term?

Some administration officials think the way to go is to ape Jimmy Carter and create a new cabinet department:

The administration may . . . merge the Department of Commerce, the Office of the United States Trade Representative and some economic divisions at the State Department into a new agency, administration officials said. Possible names include the Department of Jobs or the Department of Competitiveness.

So let's see if we have this straight: There's already a Department of Labor, so we need a Department of Jobs? If we really need a new cabinet-level agency to deal with unemployment, why not at least have a little wit and call it the Department of Redundancy Department?-

An aside but related - All of this "focused like a laser beam" on jobs by this administration rekindled and repackaged of course for his on-going campaign for re-election reminded me that I know I had heard the same word's before?

Outta' My Monday Mornin' Mind, It wasn't the Tequila,,,,

Looking back on time I get a kick out of how my Bride and I met which was not to dissimilar to that of my parents albeit in another era,,in a saloon. Chance meeting really and too long a story to tell but will say that my Bride does not partake in drinking alcohol but maybe twice a year if that, God Bless her.

I heard this song again and the theme of "one time is never enough" hit me more than the mention of Tequila as I am currently working almost as many hours as I was then (actually way more hours back then) when we first met and the balance wire I walked between keeping her and maintaining my job did indeed almost kill me. One date with Jackie was never enough, no I married her,,,,,,

(p.s. The guitar in this is excellent)

Alas, it did not kill me and I am a better man for it as it taught me much and finalized direction for me, Jackie saved me from myself. No, not an alcoholic here but a rather hard-working and hard-playing man and was in much need of slowing down. Medicine is actually poison and she is the poison I needed sent by God!

WHEN it was discovered that his grandparents were strong socialists who sent Obama's mother to a socialist school where she was introduced to Frank Marshall Davis. He was later introduced to young Barrack Hussein Obama. People said it didn't matter.

WHEN people found out that Barrack Hussein Obama was enrolled as a Muslim child in school and his father and stepfather were both Muslims, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he wrote in another book he authored "I will stand with them (Muslims) should the political winds shift in an ugly direction" people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he admittedly, in his book, said he chose Marxist friends and professors in college-- people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he traveled to Pakistan after college on an unknown national passport, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he sought the endorsement of the Marxist Party in 1996 as he ran for the Illinois Senate, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he sat in a Chicago Church for twenty years and listened to a preacher spew hatred for America and preach black liberation theology, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN an independent Washington organization, that tracks Senate voting records, gave him the distinctive title as the "most liberal senator," people said it didn't matter.

WHEN the Palestinians in Gaza set up a fund raising telethon to raise money for his election campaign, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN his voting record supported gun control, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he refused to disclose who donated money to his election campaign, as other candidates had done, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he received endorsements from people like Louis Farrakhan and Mummar Kadaffi and Hugo Chavez, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN it was pointed out that he was a total newcomer and had absolutely no experience at anything except community organizing, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he chose friends and acquaintances such as Bill Ayers and Bernadine Dohrn who were revolutionary radicals, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN his voting record in the Illinois senate and in the U.S. Senate came into question, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he refused to wear a flag lapel pin, and did so only after a public outcry, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN people started treating him as a Messiah and children in schools were taught to sing his praises, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he stood with his hands over his groin area for the playing of the National Anthem and Pledge of Allegiance, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he surrounded himself in the White house with advisors who were pro-gun control, pro- abortion, pro-homosexual marriage and wanting to curtail freedom of speech to silence the opposition people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he aired his views on abortion, homosexuality and a host of other issues, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he said he favors sex education in Kindergarten, including homosexual indoctrination, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN his personal background was either scrubbed or hidden and nothing could be found about him, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN the place of his birth was called into question, and he refused to produce a birth certificate, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he had an association in Chicago with Tony Rezco--a man of questionable character and who is now in prison and had helped Obama to a sweet deal on the purchase of his home-- people said it didn't matter.

WHEN it became known that George Soros, a multi-billionaire Marxist, spent a ton of money to get him elected, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he started appointing White House Czars that were radicals, revolutionaries, and even avowed Marxist/Communist, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he stood before the Nation and told us that his intentions were to "fundamentally transform this Nation" into something else, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN it became known that he had trained ACORN workers in Chicago and served as an attorney for ACORN, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed cabinet members and several advisors who were tax cheats and socialists, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed a Science Czar, John Holdren, who believes in forced abortions, mass sterilizations and seizing babies from teen mothers, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed Cass Sunstein as Regulatory Czar who believes in "Explicit Consent," harvesting human organs without family consent, and allowing animals to be represented in court, while banning all hunting, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed Mark Lloyd, as Diversity Czar, who believes in curtailing free speech; taking from one and giving to another to spread the wealth; who supports Hugo Chavez, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN Valerie Jarrett was selected as Obama's Senior White House Advisor and she is an avowed Socialist, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN Anita Dunn, White House Communications Director said Mao Tse Tung was her favorite philosopher-- and the person she turned to most for inspiration, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed Carol Browner as Global Warming Czar, and her being a well known socialist working on Cap and Trade as the nations largest tax, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he appointed Van Jones, an ex-con and avowed Communist as Green Energy Czar, who since had to resign when this was made known, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN Tom Daschle, Obama's pick for health and human services secretary could not be confirmed, because he was a tax cheat, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN as President of the United States , he bowed to the King of Saudi Arabia , people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he traveled around the world criticizing America and never once talking of her greatness, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN his actions concerning the Middle-East seemed to support the Palestinians over Israel , our long time ally, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he took American tax dollars to resettle thousands of Palestinians from Gaza to the United States , people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he upset the Europeans by removing plans for a missile defense system against the Russians, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he played politics in Afghanistan by not sending troops early-on when the Field Commanders said they were necessary to win, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he started spending us into a debt that was so big we could not pay it off, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he took a huge spending bill under the guise of stimulus and used it to pay off organizations, unions, and individuals that got him elected, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he took over insurance companies, car companies, banks, etc., people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he took away student loans from the banks and put it through the government, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he designed plans to take over the health care system and put it under government control, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he claimed he was a Christian during the election and tapes were later made public that showed Obama speaking to a Muslim group and 'stating' that he was raised a Muslim; was educated as a Muslim; and that he is still a Muslim-- people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he set into motion a plan to take over the control of all energy in the United States through Cap and Trade, people said it didn't matter.

WHEN he finally completed his transformation of America into a Socialist State , people finally woke up--- but it was too late.

Add these up one by one and you get a phenomenal score that points to the fact that Barrack Hussein Obama is determined to turn America into a Marxist-Socialist society.

All of the items in the preceding paragraphs have been put into place. All can be documented very easily. Before you disavow this do an internet search. The last paragraph alone is not yet cast in stone. You and I will write that paragraph. Will it read as above or will it be a more happy ending for most of America ?

If you are an Obama Supporter don't be angry with me because I think Barrack Hussein Obama is a socialist. Far too many facts support he is indeed a Socialist.

If you seek the truth you will be richer for it.

Don't just belittle the opposition.. Search for the truth. Democrats, Republicans, Independents, Constitutionalists, Libertarians all need to pull together or watch the demise of a free democratic society.

Pray for Americans to seek the truth and take action for it will keep us FREE. Our biggest enemy is not China , Russia , North Korea , and Iran our biggest enemy is a contingent of politicians in Washington DC . The government will not help, so we need to do it ourselves.

Question....will you ignore this, or pass it on to others who don't know about Obama's actions and plans for the USA , so that they may know how to vote in November, 2012 and the ensuing years?

It's your decision.

Freaky Video - 'Roman god cloud' cruises past Canadian cameraman

We all have the ability to see in cloud formation's whatever our minds perceive but rarely if ever do any one of us "see" the same as it is an individual perception and usually last but only seconds. However this is nothing short of phenomenal as all are able to clearly see the same 'face'.

metro.co.uk - Posted on YouTube, the footage was filmed as a storm rolled across the picturesque region of Grand Falls, New Brunswick.

As the cameraman pans across his backyard the huge face (1min 45sec) can be seen forming a human-like side-profile with a nose, mouth, eyes and a beard all clearly discernible.

The distinctive features have sent the internet into a buzz and some users have even spotted other weird goings-on in the clip, including what appears to be a pig flying (3 secs in).

Questions will surely be asked as to whether this was just a spooky occurrence or an elaborate message beamed down from the gods.

For now though, lets just agree that it's nothing more than a natural wonder.

I was at work thinking on my Dad, his birthday and how much I missed him and then the radio station I was listening to played the following,,,,,,

If I were a lesser man I might have lost it right then and there when that played on the radio given my thoughts at the time but I was at work and that is not at all the way I was raised.

It is simple as I was taught, there is a time and place for everything so I decided this forum might be appropriate to give a shout-out (I pray Heaven has ears) to my Dad,,,,

No, my Dad was not a millionaire nor a stranger to me but that video and song reminds me much of the many good times we did have together.

What my father did give and leave with me though is priceless, integrity.

Well it's official now as I am sure the entire world knows, Barack Hussein Obama is officially the worst POTUS of these United States in history. He is personally responsible as sitting POTUS for losing, for the first time in history, America's AAA credit rating.

The caption on the picture is a tad misleading in that what Obama has achieved thus far in damaging the country as bad as he has, it can and will get worse so long as he remains in office. So no, his work is not done, not by a long shot.

When this actually starts to hit all of us, and no one individual or company will go untouched by this in the U.S. let alone worldwide by rising cost's or better said inflation we can expect much unrest as most of us have never been witness too previously.

I thought of using "OMG" in the title being this is a report from the Associated Press (AP) as in I believed they might have seen the light,,, then I thought again.

In not one word of the following 'report' do they mention this is Obamas, then Senator Obamas that is, "hometown". Nor do they mention that his former White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel is now the Mayor let alone his replacement in said CoS post is also from Chicago and family to the reckless and corrupted Daley dynasty.

No, the AP skipped all of that recent history but did a good job in illustrating what this current definition of 'change' means and the certain destruction left in their wake,,,,,,

We were told that all the stimulus; TARP, Bailouts, QE1 & 2, Obamcare, Shovel Ready, Recovery Summer I & 2, printing of worthless paper (dollars), green energy,,you name it,,by liberals, that these "programs" would create or save millions of jobs and yet we have unemployment @ 9.2% and growing.

Then of course the promise of a grand future by passing an INCREASE in how much the government can BORROW to pay for those "programs" already passed in congress and signed by shit-head Obama we could not afford to begin with.

Well, we all witnessed what that fucking shit brought didn't we, worldwide for that matter most notably in world markets.

All one has to do to see where all of this is going is to look at and study Chicago politics which is not that dissimilar to that of Moscow, Caracas, Havana or better yet Pyongyang to get a fucking clue!

I believe I owe all my blogging friend's an explanation as to why I have been somewhat hit or miss and or absent from commenting on your wonderful sites and posts.

Google awhile back had a problem and am sure most felt it where as some of us including myself could not log on to our own blogs. Well I just got that back. I have commented on a few to see if my smiling Leprechaun face showed up and thus far it has.

Needless to say I was very frustrated with Google about this! I was going to change the look of my blog anyhow but thought if I did during this dilemma it might change my status (signing in), but alas it did not.

During this 'brownout' I found I could not comment on many of your sites due to a rule on commenting on these sites of not being able to sign in under "Name" and this includes a site I am part of; Left Coast Resistance.

This situation created by Google did not prevent me from posting but it has been irregular due to a heavy work schedule (60-68 hours a week as of late) and I cannot thank all of you enough for sticking around and keeping up the good fight yourselves!

Government Overregulation Threatens Economic Growth

As the current financial "crisis" continues and all assume it will be avoided by August 2nd or there abouts our Nation will still suffer and suffocate under the current regime and this will not at all put confidence in business owners due to regulations put upon them.

All these new regulations really equate to hidden taxes or "unfunded mandates" on business and most informed folk's know full well what two major things happen when this occurs;

1) The business's of all sizes and industries pass on those higher taxes or cost of new "regulation's" to the consumer be it individuals or other business's and

2) When the cost of doing and or operating a business rise they cease to do any hiring of new worker's and most likely will begin a new round of layoff's.

Even if this so-called "crisis" is averted we will not be out of the wood's of a dangerous financial forest until we stop all the culprits such as Green Peace, Van Jones and Al Gore with his ilk from lobbying against American interest's and that is people working to support their families.

The Return of a Zero-Sum World

In his short story "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" (1845), originally published as a hoax, Edgar Allan Poe described a dying man who was hypnotized precisely at the moment of his death. The hypnosis preserved him for some time, until the hypnotist broke the spell. As a result, "his whole frame at once -- within the space of a single minute, or even less, shrunk -- crumbled -- absolutely rotted away beneath my hands. Upon the bed, before that whole company, there lay a nearly liquid mass of loathsome -- of detestable putrescence."

At the moment, the American body politic resembles the body of M. Valdemar. To be more precise, both American conservatism and American progressivism in their familiar forms are dead, but decay has not caught up with them yet, because both are in a state of suspended animation.

The world changed radically when the global economy crashed in 2008, but the news has not yet reached Washington. The Republicans are giving long-discredited Reaganomics another good old college try, while Barack Obama, having surrounded himself by veterans of Bill Clinton's economic team, is practicing, or malpracticing, 1990s style neoliberalism, or "Rubinomics," named after Democratic Party fundraiser and Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin.

Reaganomics and Rubinomics were both toxic political byproducts of the generation-long asset inflation of the late 20th century in the United States. As long as the bubble lasted, their exploding wealth permitted Wall Street "bundlers" or fundraisers to capture both national parties by dominating campaign finance. Financialized conservatism differed from financialized progressivism, but the two schools of thought were both based on cheerful happy-talk scenarios in which there were no deep conflicts of interests between the rich and the rest in America.

Robert Wright, borrowing the concept of cooperative "non-zero-sum" and competitive "zero-sum" games from mathematical game theory, caught the utopian spirit of the Bubble Era in his bestseller Non Zero: The Logic of Human Destiny (2000). Both Reaganomics and Rubinomics depend on a non-zero-sum economy in which everybody goes home with a prize and "a rising tide lifts all boats." The right's trickle-down theory assumes that as the few get richer, the many will get richer as well, eliminating distributional conflicts among classes.

New Democrat neoliberalism in the tradition of Rubin, Clinton and Obama also posits a non-zero-sum game -- it might be called "social promotion" theory rather than trickle-down theory. In social-promotion progressivism, the New Deal project of progress through more money for the majority -- higher market wages and more contributory tax-based social insurance -- has been replaced by the New Democrat project of redefining social mobility as educational credentials and high-paying professional jobs for the majority. According to the neoliberal happy-talk narrative, as the children of the working class go to the university and join the ever-expanding college-educated professional class, there will be a labor shortage at the bottom. The labor shortage can be filled not only by the native poor but also by vast numbers of immigrants, whose entry into the labor market will not lower wages or raise the costs of welfare. The outsourcing of American industry doesn't matter, the neoliberals told us, because even if everything is made in China, the inventors, bankers and consultants will stay in America, and their posh ranks will include the upwardly mobile children of former manufacturing workers. Win-win, zero-sum, everybody's happy!

But the world of Reaganites and Rubinites collapsed in 2008, when it became clear that much American and global wealth had been illusory. In the past few years, the government has sought to prevent investors who bought toxic junk and homeowners who bought overpriced houses from simply eating their losses, as speculators are supposed to do when they make bad bets. But this policy has merely kicked the can down the road. At some point, as in the case of M. Valdemar, the mass of dead money will have "shrunk -- crumbled -- absolutely rotted away." A lot of Americans, most of them rich people or affluent professionals, will face the prospect of being much poorer, permanently.

This will produce a crisis for upscale progressives in the nonprofit sector and public sector, as well as for impoverished upscale Republicans who had planned to play the markets until they could buy private islands. Social promotion liberalism assumes that the economy can support an ever-growing class of affluent white-collar workers, while trickle-down conservatism assumes that the economy can support an ever-growing class of ever-richer investors. But what if, in the New Normal economy, there are too many professionals for the job market, and too many investors chasing too few investment opportunities?

The most probable outcome, when the depth of wealth destruction becomes clear, is likely to be crony capitalism -- the use of political power to provide jobs and income for a much greater number of self-styled "venture capitalists," corporate managers, nonprofit workers, university professors and highly paid public sector managers (not ordinary civil servants like schoolteachers and police officers) than the slowly growing, post-crash economy can actually afford. The right will try to preserve and expand a simulacrum of free enterprise, in the form of defense contractors and privatized welfare state functions. The left wing of the elite will try to create a zombie economy based on taxpayer-subsidized "green industries" that would collapse without tax subsidies and mandates on utility rate-payers. Each party will try to cut the zombie sector of its rival in order to fund its own pet zombies. In the long run, the attempt to prevent an elite economy that is already dead from decomposing, by putting it into suspended animation, is unlikely to succeed, but the project could last a decade or two. Bubble Conservatism and Bubble Progressivism will morph into Zombie Conservatism and Zombie Progressivism.

Less in the spirit of Adam Smith or John Maynard Keynes than of Edgar Allan Poe, self-described "conservatives" and "progressives" will struggle to create an American zombie economy with protected enclaves for the managerial and professional elites. Meanwhile, most ordinary Americans will work in industries that, unlike elite zombie sectors like defense, private healthcare, higher education, the higher civil service and the subsidized green economy, are not rigged and protected from competition. American workers in the dwindling manufacturing sector will continue to face competition from low-wage workers and state capitalist regimes abroad. Many more American workers in the domestic service industry will face competition from immigrants, particularly in low-wage jobs. As the "classes" wall themselves off from competition in their protected, subsidized crony capitalist and nonprofit and public sector jobs, the masses are likely to insist that they, too, deserve to be protected from zero-sum competition with foreign workers and immigrants.

To make matters worse, if the crony capitalists of the right succeed in cutting back Social Security and Medicare, American wage-earners will be compelled to pay more of their stagnant incomes to private mutual fund managers and insurance companies. And if the green crony capitalists of the left succeed, working Americans will be forced permanently to pay artificially higher utility bills to subsidize politically-connected "venture capitalists" who will derive a permanent, rigged stream of income from zombie green corporations, whose uneconomical solar and wind energy will be purchased by utility companies under legal mandates written by green lobbyists.

At the moment, the Tea Party has tapped into popular anger, but it represents the last gasp of a dying Reaganism, not a genuine populist alternative. At some point, a national populist movement in the spirit of Ross Perot, Patrick Buchanan and Lou Dobbs will almost certainly reappear in the United States. As in Europe, the next American populism is likely to focus on immigrants, who compete with many American workers, more than on trade, which affects comparatively few. Needless to say, the servant-bossing elites of both parties can be counted on to cry "Racism! Nativism!" at the prospect of having to pay Americans to perform tasks done now by Central American maids, European au pairs and East Asian tutors.

Protectionism and immigration restrictionism have been the typical responses of nations to depressions before, in the 1870s, the 1890s and the 1930s. These policies don't work well, in the theoretical sense that they do not promote long-term global growth as well as would a combination of liberal trade and immigration policy with coordinated, demand-expanding Keynesian expansionary policies among all nations at the same time.

But protectionism and immigration restriction can succeed in the short run. If you preserve your domestic market for domestic producers, you encourage domestic investment and create domestic jobs, as multinational companies, whether nominally American or foreign, are forced to locate production in the U.S. in order to have access to American consumers. This assumes that many if not all customers will have no choice but to buy necessary goods from the protected national industries. Similarly, if you reduce the flow of immigrant labor, you create domestic jobs, assuming a fixed demand for necessary, labor-intensive services in sectors like healthcare. In the long run, your country and others will be worse off than they would be in an imaginary world without barriers to the free flow of goods, labor and capital. But that is like arguing that we would all be better off in "Star Trek's" imaginary United Federation of Planets.

Which side will ultimately prevail in America and other Western democracies -- the crony capitalists or the national populists? In some Western countries, national populists may successfully combine support for the welfare state with restrictions on outsourcing and mass immigration. In others, like the United States, the crony capitalists of the oligarchic left and oligarchic right may create Latin America-like societies, in which a cosmopolitan, globe-trotting elite dwells in fortified communities and downtowns and rural manors, surrounded by a mass of the poor and near-poor, for whom the "progressive" crony capitalists seek slightly higher levels of means-tested welfare.

My guess is that in most first-world countries the national populists will eventually succeed. The depressions of the 19th and 20th centuries produced waves of nationalism, protectionism and immigration restriction; why should this recession, which is looking more and more like a depression, be any different? Such an outcome would be resisted by America's financial elite and its professional elite, including liberal professionals. But both of these economic elites are much too big to be sustained by a slow-growing U.S. and world economy. Both elites will be downsized in the years to come, and while their political power will remain disproportionate, it will weaken.

You can be certain of one thing. If you think that today's American politics is bitter and polarized, wait until upscale crony capitalists of left and right who seek to tax America's impoverished workers to subsidize their zombie economic sectors collide with working-class Americans demanding labor-market protection from immigrant competitors and imports. Fasten your seat belts. Things are going to get nasty.
