How anyone can call an increase in unemployment slow growth in employment really should have their collective heads examined and cease from referring to themselves as journalists.
Just the start of the article says this,,,,
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. economy may be in for a prolonged period of soft growth as employers hired the fewest number of workers in eight months in May and the unemployment rate rose to 9.1 percent.Hiring fewer people does not add to the official number of the unemployed, that is caused by people losing a job.
The article goes on to explain,,,,
The rise in the unemployment rate from 9.0 percent in April reflected discouraged workers who had been inspired by the pick-up in hiring in April re-entering the labor market. That is idiotic and false. Unemployment numbers are derived from those actually receiving benefits, so those "discouraged workers" were not counted in April to begin with. Further, since hiring was not taking place those same workers did not get hired or even if they did, not nearly long enough to qualify for unemployment benefits so again could not be counted.
A rise from 9.0 to 9.1% in unemployment can only be explained by people losing their jobs which means they were not previously counted among the unemployed.
I suggest a different title to the article; 'Unemployment growth sharply increases in May', as the only growth seen here is the number of the unemployed.
