I am one who enjoys numerous styles of music but am somewhat bemused as to the descriptive nature of grouping labels given to different styles by the "industry". The following selection (embedded below) is by the band 'The Airborne Toxic Event' in a live performance of their song 'Sometime Around Midnight'.
iConcert, and I imagine the music industry as a whole has labeled this band/song as 'Alternative' which is where my bemusement enters. This particular song sounds very 'Retro' circa 1980's to this music lovers ears which is to say recreating a sound from the past.
Now when such sounds were first popular, again 1980's, they were deemed 'New Wave', not as an alternative but simply rather to introduce and differentiate from an explosion of popular music from all disciplines of the music world.
In my youth I had always believed 'New Wave' was way ahead of it's time. Whether or not my belief then was accurate or not I can say with certainty that I am always pleased when I hear newer bands with similar sounds as it harken's me back to a better day.
